Storms can develop quickly on the water. While a little rain isn’t a big deal, high winds and lightning are serious risks.
Before heading out, check the forecast using NOAA weather tools or your marine radio. If storms are expected, the safest choice is simple—reschedule your trip.
If weather moves in while you’re already out:
- Slow down and stay alert
- Make sure everyone is wearing a life jacket
- Use your horn in low visibility
- Stay calm and wait for safer conditions
Lightning nearby means danger—stay low, avoid metal and electronics, and keep everyone inside the boat. If you can hear thunder, you’re within striking distance.
